Message from the Chair
It seems that the economy has had different effects on the Quality community. One being a decrease in jobs in Quality. The other side of the coin is more focus on Quality’s role in insuring that companies can compete globally and more commitment by upper management of the companies that value and understand the importance of their Quality Organization. This was a continuing theme at this year’s Maine International Trade Center Annual Meeting hearing panelist after panelist of the top exporting companies in Maine speak to how important their Quality systems are to their international customers and the success of their business. When you ask the question of why some companies relocate their off shore operations back state side the answer more often then not is “the quality of product or quality of customer service was not there”.
This summer, we had the pleasure of working with Davis Balestracci who facilitated several brain storming sessions. We focused on defining our vision and our mission. In the early days of Quality we had a mission to teach the gospel of Quality. ASQ fellows Sumner K Wiley Jr. and Dennis Anderson lead the way in teaching Quality principles and we now have an established Quality community. The questions are how do we go to the next level? How do we understand the needs of the Business and Service Industry? What is our role?
As a Quality Professional there are actions you can take, not to promote our section but to promote the principles our section represents. Become a leader in your company. Take the lead in process improvement initiatives. Become involved and knowledgeable of all of your company’s processes and departments roles. If something needs to be accomplished get involved, it takes stepping out of your comfort zone but it will reward you with professional and personal growth. Explore other industries and cultures and see if they fit your industries’ needs.
You our members are the most important part of the ASQ section #0105. What you bring to the section and what you bring to each other in knowledge, sharing innovations and innovative thinking is invaluable. It starts with you.
Regards,
